He's asleep!
It's been a long time since I've written a post. I don't have a lot of time or energy these days hence the picture of the day, quick and easy.
This morning Michael has taken two decent naps in what we call his big boy bed aka the co-sleeper. (I slept during his first nap.) That's slightly miraculous. Michael isn't the best sleeper. I think he's afraid he's going to miss out on some action. I wonder where he gets that from. At night he usually sleeps about 3 hours if we're lucky. It's not always easy to put him back to sleep after his nighttime feedings. During the day it's hit and miss. We try lots of different things and what worked one day doesn't always work the next day.
Today Michael is seven weeks old. It's somewhat of an oxymoron. Time has flown by, yet it also seems like an eternity.
In the beginning it was tough. I have never experienced anything like mommy-hood. Sleepless days and nights. Crying. Our boy knows how to express himself very well. Wah!!!!!!!!!!!!
When he was one month, we introduced the pacifier. I was super hesitant. Not sure why? Read lots of information. I must admit the pacifier usually is great. Tony and I realized we have to be careful not to "plug" our baby. So we go through a mental checklist before giving him the binky.
Is he hungry? Wet? Want to be cuddled? Once we assess his basic needs, we give him his binky. I must admit it doesn't always work. Sometimes he spits it out. But when he does take it, it really soothes him.
Michael gets chubbier and cuter everyday. He's smiling more, discovering his hands, feet, and voice. He has this great squeal. I'd say he squeals more than actual cooing.
His newest feat is rolling from his tummy to his back. He's also trying to roll from his back to his tummy. Thankfully he hasn't mastered that one yet. I can see a new game at night. Michael will roll onto his stomach and we'll turn him over his back. Just when we thought we'd get a few more hours of shut eye.
The other thing he does is stare and explore his surroundings. He is such a curious boy. Yesterday we went out to lunch and he kept himself occupied by staring at the ceiling, lights, wall. When it was time to go, we covered him with his blanket in his stroller and he screamed his little head off because he wasn't finished looking at all the new things.
Our little Michael is really a lovebug. He's great when he gets sleep. Since he fights sleep so much, he can be grumpy. I think that will change soon. (I hope) Today he is sleeping great. That's why I've written such a long post. Not sure when I'll get to write again.
Each day does get better. Please keep us in your prayers as we muddle through this thing called parenthood.

Michael is 1 month old today.
Today we celebrated Michael's 1 month birthday by going to the Pediatrician. Michael weighs a whopping 8 lbs 13 Oz, two pound more than his birth weight. Please keep us in your prayers as daddy goes back to work this week. Reflecting back, below are pictures just hours after Michael was born. Poor little guy had a rough start, but beside a little crying he is doing great now.

At last, venturing out ...
Today marked a major milestone for Trisha. You have to understand a bit of history to appreciate the significance. Trisha was at a baby shower some time ago, and when someone mentioned that you basically hang out on the coach for 3 months after giving birth, breast feeding, Trisha started to hyperventilate. For those of you who know her, she is very active. Trisha couldn't imagine being tethered to the coach for such a long time.
So after almost a month of being confined to the "breast feeding station" and getting a severe case of cabin fever, Trisha, Michael, and I ventured out this morning to meet Faith at Starbuck's and enjoy the local farmer's market. Trisha thoroughly enjoyed the outing and was even able to feed Michael in public. A few pictures below.

Such a Big Name for a Little Boy

Michael Christian Kolbe explained: (picture by www.johnstubler.com)
Michael: From St. Michael, the defender of heaven. The name means "Who is like God?" A question, not a statement. St. Michael valiantly fought to protect heaven from the Lucifer and the other fallen angels. When the devil said, "I will not serve God." St. Michael responded, "Who is like God?" Of course the answer is no one. We hope that St. Michael will alway protect, pray and watch over Michael.
Christian: Follower of Christ. We hope that Michael will grow up to know, love, and serve Christ.
Kolbe: Since Michael was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, we wanted to honor Our Lady. Maximilian Kolbe, a priest, is known "as the man for others". He lived and died in a concentration camp. A prisoner escaped so as a punishment the guards chose 10 men to die in place of the one. The last man they chose was married. He pleaded with the guards and begged saying, "I am a father and husband." Maximilian stepped forwarded and said, "I am a Catholic priest. Take me instead." The guards did. He was starved along with the other 9 men. Prisoners usually screamed and went crazy, but all the men that were with Maximilian Kolbe prayed the rosary and sang hymns to Our Lady. All died peacefully. Kolbe was the last to die. The guards ended up killing him by injecting carbolic acid into his veins. He also died peacefully on the eve of the Assumption. Like Maximilian Kolbe, we hope that Michael will grow up to be a man for others.
